Deendar Anjuman

An investigation report prepared by the AP police on the little-known ‘heretic’ Muslim sect whose leaders allegedly bombed churches in AP, Karnataka and Goa to heighten Hindu-Christian rift

We are reproducing below the report prepared by the Andhra Police, in full, and which has been made available to Communalism Combat. But to begin with, we must make it clear that it is not for us but the courts to decide whether the accused leaders and members of the Deendar Anjuman are guilty of the charges levelled against them. We are reproducing it nonetheless because we find it extremely educative in many ways.

So as to retain the original flavour of the report, we have limited our editorial function to the use of only a few punctuation marks, for ease of reading. Otheriwse, even spelling mistakes have been left untouched.

Deendar Anjuman is a fanatic Muslim sect founded in the year 1924 at Gadag in Karnataka by one Siddique Hussain. The sole objective of this sect is to Islamise India through proselytisation and preaching. Unlike other fanatic Muslim organisations, it had chosen a unique method of propagating Islam by using scriptures, popular beliefs, mythologies and prophecies of other religions.

In furtherance of achieving their objective the preachers of DDA study the scriptures of other religions and point out the lacunae and contradictions in them in order to impress the people that the Islam is the only complete religion in the Universe. It has targeted certain influential sections of Hindu Society like Lingayats and under–privileged sections like Daliths and succeeded in converting some of them into Islam.

Brief History

Siddique Hussain, founder of Deendar Anjuman was born in the year 1886 at Balampet (V) of Gulbarga district in erstwhile Nizam state. He was an ophthalmologist by profession. At the age of 40 he claimed that he got divine revelation, saying that he is the incarnation of Chanbasweshwar, the founder of Lingayat sect, and assumed a name — ‘Hazrat Moulana Deendar Chanbasweshwar Qibla’ — to attract and influence Lingayats towards Islam, who at that lime were against the dominance of Upper Castes.

He assumed the name ‘Hazrat Moulana Siddiq Deendar Chanbasweshwar Quibla’ in order to avoid any adverse reaction; he propounded a theory that Lingayats are descendants of Arabs. After the First World War rapid changes occurred in the world and in India also, like downfall of calipha, erosion of Muslim political power in India, freedom movement, Aryasamaj and its shuddi movement gave birth to several reactionary and self–strengthening movements among Muslims of India. The DDA is one among them, which cleverly masked its hatred towards other religions under the guise of Universal peace and brotherhood and embarked on the path of Islamisation.

The general Hindus and Christians considered DDA as liberal and secular, while the orthodox Muslim sects like Ahle Hadees, Tabligh-e-Jamath, and JEI etc. branded them as heretics. However, it turned out to be a highly fanatical and shrewd Muslim militant organisation.

The founder of Deendar Anjuman had mastered more than 10 languages and read the scriptures of all other important religions. He selected economically and socially backward areas of Nizam state like Gulbarga, Gadag, Nanded, Sholapur etc. for propagation of his ideology.

He established a school of World Religion at Bangalore. Later on, it was shifted to Hyderabad, in which students were taught comparative studies of all prominent religions.

He conducted international religious conferences every year. He propounded five fundamental principles, they are:

1. Eko Jagadeeswar — Belief in unity of God (Allah).

2. Eko Jagad Guru — Belief in world teacher (Jagatguru, i.e., Prophet Mohammed).

3. Sarva avatar satya, sarva dharma granth satya — Belief in all prophets, avataras and their revealed scriptures.

4. Samatha — Equality among human beings.

5. Sammelan Pradhana — Composite form of prayer.

He said that previous messengers and avataras were sent for delivering God’s message to a particular section of people of particular lands, Mohammed is the last prophet and he is the prophet for entire mankind (i.e., Jagad guru). He is the Kalki avatar for Hindus. So there is no need for Hindus to wait for Kalki’s arrival, as he had already arrived in the name of Mohammed. All the religions are like rivers leading to the ocean (i.e., Islam).

He claimed that the arrival of Prophet Mohammed is mentioned in most of the scriptures, mythologies, puranas and prophecies of all religions. To substantiate this theory, he quoted various prophecies from ‘songs of Solomon’, ‘the book of Daniel’, the book of ‘Psalms’, ‘Sara’s prophecy’ and Hindu scriptures like Bhagawatpuran, Kalkipuran, Bhavishyakoti Puran and Atharva Veda.

Finally, he argued that all the religions in the world except Islam are incomplete and Mohammed is the last and final prophet for entire humanity. So, salvation to mankind lies only in Islam. For that they must convert into Islam and read Kalma.

He tried his level best to attract Hindus, especially of low socio–economic background by putting forth a number of theories and arguments.

Cow slaughter

He argued that cow sacrifice is in vogue in Hinduism. In Vedic period people used to sacrifice cow and divinities like Rama, Sita, Krishna, Arjuna etc. sacrificed cows. Marathas and Rajputs cleverly started the cow protection movement to create hatred on Muslims and thereby weakening their (Muslims) political power. So, there is no sanctity for a cow and cow slaughter is not a crime.

Siddiq Hussain propounded another peculiar theory in order to win over the lower strata of Hindu society. He wrote a book titled as Lingayat in which he claims that the inhabitants of peninsular India, i.e., Dravidians are ancient Arab migrants. The king Vaali is nothing but corrupt form of Arabic word Waali. The Dravidians are Shiva worshippers; ancient Arabs also practised phallic worship. The Aryans (i.e., modern–day Christians) attacked and subjugated the Dravidians and destroyed their cultural legacy. Only with the advent of Islam and subsequent establishment of Islamic states in Deccan, the Dravidians were freed from Aryan yoke. All the 10 avatars of Hindu mythology are the avatharas of Vishnu only. So, Dravidians had nothing to do with them.

In his attempt to attract Lingayats into Islam, he has shown lot of similarities between Lingayats and Arabs, like prevalence of widow remarriage and polygamy and similarities in burial customs etc. He claimed that at the age of 40 years, God thrice revealed him that he was ‘Chanbasweshwar’ (founder of Lingayat sect).

All the above claims and theories unveil the real intention of Siddiq Hussain to convert the majority community into Islam.

He prepared (63) preachers (muballigeen) to spread his message. A dress code was fixed for them – green turban; pink cloak, pink or black waistcoat; light orange or saffron colour kurta, pyzama.

The general followers are called muwains. Every muwains should take an oath of allegiance called baith from the head of the sect. During baith, the followers have to proclaim that they will sacrifice their lives and properties to their gurus.

Organisation

The headquarters is located at Asifnagar, Hyderabad, called as Khankha–e–Sarwar–e–Alam.

Consists of 9 office bearers:

President, vice–president, general secretary, secretary, director, publicity Secretary, accountant, treasurer, superintendent.

It has three committees: general body, executive committee, managing committee.

There are 23 Board of Directors who will elect the above office bearers for a tenure of 3 years. President shall be the representative of the founder of the Anjuman.

The head–quarters is located in an area of 4 acres and six guntas, which comprises two mosques, one for males and another for females, one langar khana, grave yard, library, dargah of founder and open ground for meetings.

According to Rule No.58 (General Rules) only Muslims can become the members of the Anjuman.

Finances

Donations from followers. Most of the Deendar youth who are working abroad, especially in Gulf countries, send donations.

Publication

The founder wrote about 20 books, which were translated into English, Telugu, Urdu and Kannada. They published monthly journal called Deendar for some time, but it is not coming out regularly.

Activities

During the Nizam rule the Deendar Anjuman was aggressive in preaching and conversion. Deendars enjoyed Nizam patronage initially and got 4 1/2 acres of land as gift at Asifnagar.

During the last days of Nizam’s rule, Khasim Razvi (head of Rajakars) developed antagonism towards Deendars. The Nizam also expressed his displeasure towards them.

After the accession of Hyderabad into Indian Union the Deendar Anjuman continued its activities in a low key. The Deendars started preaching by pointing out the similarities between the prophecies and mythologies of Hinduism and Islam.

On 9–8–1957, Mohammad-ul-Qureshi, a senior functionary of Deendar Anjuman, while addressing a Friday congregation, stated that there is a need for nuclear device like hydrogen bomb and atom bombs for strengthening of Islam.

The violent trend of DDA can be traced back to its inception, wherein the founder himself in his speech at a meeting in the year 1939 at Asifnagar, Hyderabad, exhorted the audience to learn the use of weapons. On the occasion of Bakrid, Siddique Deendar has published a pamphlet appealing the Muslim community to sacrifice their lives for the sake of Islam. He also advised them to arm with lathies and swords.

On 7–4–1939, in his address after Friday prayers, he exhorted the Muslims to be united and not to trust the friendship of Hindu community. He announced that the donations collected on behalf of Deendar Anjuman would be utilised for the welfare of Muslims and Jehad.

During May/June 1939, DDA raised a volunteer Corps, which was later on called as ‘Jamait-e–Hizbullah’.

About 10 guns were purchased for this purpose. In 1944 July, the then government denied permission to DDA to hold a conference in its premises at Asifnagar. DDA has issued a pamphlet under caption ‘Tofa-e–Darwesh’ calling upon Muslims to establish Khilafat and to convert the infidel kings to Islam.

In 1948, Deendar Anjuman was declared unlawful by the Nizam government under sec. 13 of P.S.A. (Gazette extraordinary No.l5-Vol.79) dated 25–12–1357 Fasli and arrested Siddique Deendar and 200 of his followers and interned them. Siddique Hussain Deendar died in the year 1952.

On 18–6–1954, Abdul Ghani Hameed, a DDA leader addressing a meeting at Asifnagar, warned Hindu Mahasabha and Arya Samaj that if Arya Samaj continued its shuddi programme the Deendar will make all the Hindus to embrace Islam.

Moulvi Syed Rasool, the vice-president of DDA in the address during the annual congregation (urs) in the year 1957 stated that Deendars would launch crusade whenever atrocities were committed on the Muslims.

Founder Siddiq Hussain had 4 wives and 12 children. Zia–ul–Hasan, the eldest son of Siddiq Hussain migrated to Pakistan along with his family. He used to visit India frequently to attend his father’s urs in Razab month at Deendar Ashram, Asifnagar, Hyderabad.

Deendar Anjuman has a separate unit at Mardan in the North–Western Frontier Province of Pakistan. The president of the unit is Syed Zia–ul–Hassan, son of the founder of the sect. He migrated to Pakistan in the year) 1948 and settled at Shakeer Manjil, Karvan Road, Mardan (NWFP) Pakistan.

He has another house at Landhi–I, sector–48, Karachi, Pakistan. He has 7 sons and 7 daughters. He visits India (Hyderabad) along with his sons to attend annual urs in memory of his father whose tomb is located at Deendar Anjuman Ashram, Asifnagar, Hyderabad. His Passport Number is G 435181 issued at Peshawar, Pakistan.

The Punjab, Delhi, units of Deendar Anjuman are at Latur, Osmanabad, Nanded, Sholapur, Bombay, Kolsa, Akola in Maharashtra, Gulbarga, Bangalore, Mysore, Chikballapur, Tumkur, Dharwar, Gadag, Batkurki, Ganeshgudi in Karnataka, Hyderabad city, Guntur, Vijayawada, Podana, Nuzvid of Krishna district and Kodad and Huzurnagar etc., of Nalgonda district in Andhra Pradesh. This organisation has members/ sympathisers in Vixag, Anantapur, Mahaboobnagar, Khammam, Karimnagar, Warangal, Cuddapah and Kurnool districts of Andhra Pradesh and also In Tamil Nadu etc., states and in Bangladesh.

Many of the members of Deendar Anjuman have their relatives in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

In the early 1990’s, Zia–ul–Hassan and some of the Pakistani delegates like Syed Bin Waheed Bin Habeebullah, R/o Karachi during their visits, indoctrinated some of the Deendar followers with Jehadi ideology and invited them to Pakistan. Approximately, 25 members of Deendar Anjuman visited Mardan (Pakistan) and undergone arms training sponsored by Zia–UI–Hassan (between 1991 and 1994).

Zia–ul–Hassan invited active members of Deendar Anjuman to visit Pakistan in order to undergo arms/explosives training. He entrusted, the task of talent spotting, selection, financing and arranging travel documents for trainees to one Moinuddin, Chilli Merchant, Hyderabad.

The Deendar Anjuman activists obtained visas on the pretext of visiting their relatives and Deendar Anjuman branch at Mardan, Pakistan.

Training camps at Pakistan

militant camps

About (25) persons underwent training in three batches from 1991 to 1994. Most of the times they travelled by Samjoutha Express train from Delhi via Attari to Lahore. The sons of Zia–ul–Hasan, i.e., Jahed, Khaleed, Javeed received them and took them to Mardan office. There they were thoroughly indoctrinated by Zia–ul–Hasan and other leaders of Deendar Anjuman to wage jehad against India. They were taken to Rawalpindi, where Deendar Pakistan branch is having a home, from where the activists were taken to training camps, in concealed vans to a place called ‘Kohst’ somewhere near Pak–Afghan border.

The training period extends from 12 to 17 days, and 4–6 members in isolated groups were given arms training. Retired military personnel who are in the age group of 50 to 55 years were the trainers. The trainees were supplied with uniform and shoes. Food, water and other logistics were supplied daily in a van.

Training was given in handling of small arms, automatic weapons, fabrication of IEDs etc. Emphasis was given on firing of assault rifles like AK–47 and machine–guns.

Training Schedule

Ř Every morning drill/running for two hours;

Ř First five days — classes on weapons–stripping and assembling of AK–47, pistol, MMG etc;

Ř Next five days — firing practice with each weapon, 15 to 20 rounds were fired every day;

Ř Next two to three days — dry practice of hand grenades, finally live practice with HE-36 grenade (one only);

Ř Next three to four days — theory and demonstration of IEDs, finally each person has to make and detonate one electrical and one non–electrical IED; on the penultimate day, demonstration of ‘rocket launchers’ was given.

After the completion of training, once again they were taken back to Mardan, from there to Lahore and finally sent back to India.

Conspiracy in the year 1994–95 — Desecration of Ambedkar statues

The son of Zia–ul–Hasan called Khalid Pasha during his visit to Hyderabad in the year 1994/95, issued instructions to Hashim Ali Siddiqui, Farooq Ali, Zakir, and Khalid Chowdary. Zia–ul–Hasan and his sons hatched a conspiracy to disturb the communal harmony and secular fabric of Indian society, thereby affecting the internal security of India. To achieve this objective, they consulted the active Deendar cadre who have undergone training and decided to desecrate Ambedkar statues, which will create a gulf between the daliths and other Hindus and further weaken Hindu society.

Khalid Pasha, son of Zia–ul–Hasan, entrusted the above task to Khalid Chowdary, Zakir, Farooq Ali, Hashim Ali of Hyderabad. Farooq Ali passed on the massage to Khaliquz Zama of Nuzvid who was in–charge of Deendar Anjuman for entire coastal area of AP. He issued instructions to Deendar cadre of Nuzvid and Vijayawada. In pursuance of above instructions, Iqbal (head of Vijayawada Deendar unit) Nazeemuddin, Khaja and others desecrated Ambedkar statues at Machavaram (Cr.No. 141/95) Poornanandapet in Vijayawada (CrNo. 172/95 of Satyanarayan-apuram P.S.). Maqbool and Zilani desecrated the Ambedkar statue at Thiruvuru.

Khalid Chowdary. Zakir carried out the task of desecration work at Nanded (CrNo 11/95 of Kandar P.S.), Udgir (Cr.No.50/95) and Parbhani (CrNo 142/95). Parbhani police caught Zakir and Khalid Chowdary and cases were registered against them. Zia–ul–Hasan and his sons avoided coming to India for 4 years as their name figured in the interrogation of Zakir and Khalid.

Conspiracy in the year 1999: Planting bombs at religious places

To create ‘nifaque’ (hatred among communities) in India by attacking religious places, Zia–ul–Hasan along with his sons visited India during October–November 1999 to preside over the Urs celebrated in the memory of Siddiq Hussain.

On 13/14th Oct. 1999, Zia–ul–Hasan visited Nuzvid and held a meeting in the residence of Khaliquz Zama, in which Khaliquz Zama, Hasanuz Zama, Shamshuz Zama, Haneef @ Anwar, Chand Basha, Hasan Mastry, Bhaji, Maqbool, Habeeb, Khalid Pasha, (son of Zia-ul-Hasan) were participated. After the meeting Zia–ul–Hasan separately summoned Khaliquz Zama and lqbal! and told them that the time has come to wage jehad to Islamise Hindustan and that he will come with Mujahideen force to invade India. He instructed them to prepare a group for nifaque (spreading hatredness between different communities).

On 17.10.1999, in the urs meeting, Zia–ul–Hasan was elected as President of Deendar Anjuman for the first time (7th, 8th and 9th of Razab month).

On 19/20th October 1999, after the conclusion of the urs at Deendar Anjuman a secret meeting was conducted by Zia–ul–Hasan. Iqbal of Vijayanagaram, participated.

In the above meeting, Zia–ul–Hasan appointed Khaliquz Zama as leader of nifaque movement and instructed all the members to follow his instructions. Zia–ul–Hasan elaborately explained about his plan of action, i.e., he will invade India with 9 lakh Mujahideen force from Kashmir side. To facilitate his invasion the members have to prepare ground so that the Indian government will be fully engaged in settling the internal troubles and Mujahideen will enter India without trouble. He also instructed his followers to disturb and destroy transport and communication facilities in order to cut north India from south India to restrict the war to north India.

In the month of February 2000, a meeting was held at Nuzvid. In that meeting, they decided to commit robberies to secure funds for the subversive activities. Jeelani @ Dadaji and Maqbool, younger brother of Khaliquz Zama, planned and organised a dacoity at Gampalagudem in between Penugolanu and Tirvuru and robbed cash of rupees 4 lakhs belonging to Andhra Bank by snatching the suitcase from a Bank employee by hitting him with a rod on the head (Cr.No.S/2000, u/s 394 IPC of Gampalagudem P.S.).

Another Rs.l8000 was sent to Gayazuddin as second instalment for purchasing explosives. The land was to be used as a safe house and training ground for later day activities.

February 2000

Farooq Ali of Hyderabad went to Pakistan and stayed there for one month. He came back in March and contacted Khaliquz Zama on telephone and invited him to Hyderabad. Khaliquz Zama went to Hyderabad and met with Farooq. Khaliquz Zama, Farooq Ali, Hashim Ali, Khalid Chowdary, Izharbaig, Zakir and others met in the flat of Hashim Ali at Yousufin Plaza, Opp: Syndicate Bank, Mehdipatnam, Hyderabad. Farooq told that, Guru (Zia ul Hasan) has advised them to start ‘nifaque’ as early as possible. He informed them that time bombs should be kept at Christian gatherings and churches.

March 2000

A meeting was held by Khaliquz Zama at Nuzvid. The members of Deendar Anjuman of Nuzvid attended the meeting. Gayazuddin, R/o Huzurnagar, Riyazuddin, R/o Kodad and Qasim, brother–in–law of Gayazuddin attended the meeting. In that meeting, on the request of Khaliquz Zama, Gayazuddin promised to supply explosive materials through Riyazuddin and Qasim for preparation of bombs. Rs.5000 was given to Gayazuddin for the purpose. Hasanuz Zama also attended the meeting.

Gayazuddin is a staunch follower of Deendar Anjuman. He is instrumental in converting a number of Hindus in to Deendar Anjuman sect in Kodad and Huzurnagar towns of Nalgonda district. Gayazuddin and his elder brother Riyazuddin approached Qasim, a petty contractor (who is also a follower of Deendar Anjuman), for the procurement of gelatine and detonators.

March/April 2000

Qasim with assistance of Safi brought the gelatine and electric detonators from one Babu of Ahmed agency of Kodad and transported it on a scooter to Nuzvid and handed it over to Shamsuz Zama. Later in the month of May, for the second time they brought gelatine and detonators from the same source and transported it to Nuzvid in a taxi and kept it in the house of Anwar; later the explosive materials were shifted to the rear side room of Hasan Mestri’s residence and the IEDs were prepared by Abdul Khadar Jeelani, brother of Khaliquz Zama, who is a Radio mechanic. He was entrusted with the task of making IEDs.

Jeelani prepared a timer device and tested it with a bulb instead of a detonator. After satisfying himself with the result, he purchased quartz movements and BPL ( 1.5 volt) batteries from Vijayawada.

Five days prior to Machilipatnam blast, Jeelani and Maqbool conducted a test blast at hillocks at Ramanakkapeta Quarry near Nuzvid to test the accuracy and impact of the IED. On 20.5.2000, Syed Noor, the brother of Ibrahim, sent a message through Iqbal to Nuzvid that, Gospel meetings were being conducted at Machilipatnam and it will be a suitable opportunity to cause explosion.

Khaliquz Zama asked Jeelani to prepare bomb and plant the same at Gospel meeting, Machilipatnam. Jeelani and Maqbool fabricated the IED and planted the same at Gospel meeting at Machilipatnam on 21.5.2000, in which 21 persons received injuries.

On 22.5.2000, Jahed Pasha, son of Zia–ul–Hasan arrived at Hyderabad from Pakistan and visited Nuzvid along with Zakir next day. He congratulated Khaliquz Zama and others for their work (i.e., Machilipatnam blast). Hasanuz Zama (IAF, New Delhi) Shamsuz Zama, Jeelani, Maqbool, Hanif, Hasan Ahmad Khaja, Mastan met Jahed Pasha. He advised them to blast a bomb in Hindu temple also, so that Hindus will suspect that it was the handiwork of Christians in retaliation to Machilipatnam blast.

Khaliquz Zama sent some explosive materials to Hyderabad through Farooq Ali. After some days Hasham or Zakir took some more explosive material from Nuzvid to Hyderabad. Javeed Pasha used the material for Hubli, Medak, Vikarabad and Goa blasts.

Ř On 25.5.2OOO, Maqbool and Jeelani prepared and exploded a time bomb at Kodandarama temple at Krishna Lanka, Vijayawada. Jahed Pasha supervised planting of explosives at Medak and Vikarabad churches.

Ř On 28.5.2000, two bombs which were prepared by Jeelani were handed over to Khalid Chowdary at Hyderabad by Haneef @ Anwar of Nuzvid. Farooq Ali and Khalid Chowdary planted one of the bombs at Vikarabad Church and Zakir (deceased) and Hashim Ali Siddiqui of Hyderabad planted another bomb at Medak Church, but both did not explode and the explosive experts diffused them.

Jeelani fabricated two timer bombs and delivered them to Iqbal at Vijayawada. Khaliquz Zama, Maqbool and Bhaji went to Iqbal’s house at Vijayawada and demonstrated the planting and initiation of time bombs to Mastan, Khaja and Humayun. In the month of June, Khaliquz Zama, Fardin Wali and Jahed Pasha went to Bangalore to meet Ibrahim and to organise the action plan of planting the bombs at various churches. There, Ibrahim gave some computer printouts, i.e., pamphlets against the conversion by Christian missionaries.

In the month of June, Jahed Pasha held a meeting at Hyderabad and instructed the core members to form groups for the future action plan. Fardeen Wali @ Fareed, a civil engineer and r/o Movva village of Krishna district, drafted the proceedings of this meeting.

1. VIP group: Each VIP group member will be in–charge of one region (Iqbal Ahmad, VJA; Shamsuz Zama, Nuzvid; Sharfuddin, Hyd.; Ibrahim, B’lore, Meera Saheb, Batkurki region). The VIP group will follow the instructions of Khaliquz Zama and execute the work. Each VIP group will

create at least one nifaque, transport and SERIA group.

Ř On 21/22–6–2000, Khaliquz Zama went to Hyderabad to meet Jahed Pasha and there he discussed about non–reaction from Christians and Hindus even after so many blasts. Then, Jahed Pasha advised Khaliquz Zama to place bombs in mosques. On 23"’ June 2000, Khaliquz Zama, Maqbool, Jeelani, Anwar, Baji and others met at Nuzvid and discussed about planting of bombs in Mosque. Haneef @ Anwar identified Markaj mosque in Guntur. .

Ř On 25.6.2000, evening Haneef @ Anwar and Baji kept a bomb at Markaz Mosque Guntur. On 25th June 2000 night, Khaliquz Zama phoned to Jahed Pasha and advised to instruct Ibrahim to stop planting bombs at Hubli and Bangalore on 8/9.7.2000 Next day Jahed Pasha contacted Khaliquz Jama over phone and expressed his happiness over the reaction of Muslims and for the extent of damage caused to the public and private property. He left for Pakistan on 26/27.6.2000. Prior to his departure to Pakistan, Jahed Pasha gave instructions to Ibrahim to cause explosions in Churches at Hubli and Bangalore on 8/9th July.

Ř On 8–7–2000, Mohammed Jafar brother of deceased Zakir R/o Hyderabad, Rishi Hiramath @ Abdul Rasheed Mannan, R/o Hubli, Muniruddin Mulla, R/o Old Hubli, planted a time bomb at St. John Lutheran Church, Hubli, which was exploded at 4 a.m.

Shamshuz Zama and his associates planned to intensify the anger and suspicion in the Christians. In order to add fuel to the flames of anger and mutual suspicion between Hindus and Christians, Shamsuz Zama and his associates prepared posters warning the Christian missionaries in the name of VHP and RSS. The stationery material, “OM stickers” were procured by Maqbool, Zakir, Ibrahim and others. Farooq Ali, Zakir and other Hyderabad associates pasted wall posters near churches at Chapel Road, Abids and Vijayanagar Colony, threatening the Christian missionaries to stop conversions or quit India (Cr. No 140/2000 u/s 153 (a) IPC of Abids P.S.; Cr.No.l58/2000 u/s 153(a) IPC of Humayunnagar P.S.). Anwar pasted sticker at RTC bus stand, Guntur on 25.6.2000 night. (No case registered).

Ibrahim and others posted a threatening letter from Bangalore under the title, “Last warning to Christian Missionaries”, in the name of VHP to Dr. K.A. Paul, founder of ‘Gospel to Unreached Millions’, Swamapalli village of Vizayanagaram district.

Failed attempts

Gayazuddin, his associates attempted to plant IEDs in some churches in Miryalguda and Tipparthi (Nalgonda) and Maqbool attempted to plant explosives in Wyra (Khammam) church but they failed to do so. They also made an attempt to plant a bomb in a church at Sholapur, Maharashtra.

Future targets

Zia–ul–Hasan and his son, Jahed Pasha, instructed Khaliquz Zama, to plant bombs and blast railway bridges, important electrical grids, government properties like FCI godowns, cotton mills etc.

Conversions

The preachers of Deendar Anjuman succeeded in converting a number of Hindu population. Especially in Nalgonda district one Gayazuddin, native of Huzurnagar (accused and arrested) confessed that he converted about 200 to 250 Hindus of the neighbouring villages into Islam. Conversions were made in Rayavarigudem, Kethavarigudem, Eethavakilla, Kattarigudem, Chillapalli, Kodad, Lingojigudem, etc. One Bhasker, native of Huzurnagar and engineering graduate is a neo–convert. He changed his name as Sirajuddin and was instrumental in converting a sizeable population of Medaram and Penchikaladinne villages of Nalgonda district. He also did some conversions in Karimnagar and Warangal districts.

Appa Rao @ Naseruddin of Endada village also did some conversions in Visakapatnam district The Vijayawada I gang also did some conversion in Krishna district.

Assessment

During the first quarter of 20th century, a number of socio-religious organisations and sects mushroomed throughout India. Most of the Muslim organisations concentrated on reformation and purification of their own community. But for the Deendar Anjuman, since its formation, the hidden agenda was Islamisation of India.

Because of their life style, like dress habits, customs and means adopted to propagate their ideology, like uttering slokas, referring Hindu divinities in their discourses and showing similarities between Hindu scriptures with that of Muslims, comparing prophet with Hindu gods alienated them from orthodox Muslims as well as Hindus. Neither rich Muslims nor Hindus patronised this sect. This is the main reason for their economic backwardness.

The heated environment in the contemporary India due to tensions between Hindus and Christians and rise in attacks on Christian missionaries and institutions by Hindu fundamentalists, such as murder of Graham Staines and his sons in Orissa, resultant escalation of tensions, has given a right opportunity for Zia–ul–Hasan and his Deendar Anjuman followers to contemplate the master strategy of creating rift between Hindus and Christians. The needle of suspicion was also never towards the Muslim community and the so called victims of attacks, i.e. Christians, have almost drawn to conclusion that these incidents are manoeuvred by the Hindu fundamentalists supported by ruling establishment.

These developments were read in the context of Zia–ul–Hasan instructing Khaliquz Zama and his faithful followers to spread nifaque in the southern India and to sabotage transport and communication systems by blasting bridges and culverts between north and south India, in order to facilitate Zia-ul-Hasan and his force to occupy India and Islamise it.

It gives a clear picture of the game plan of Pakistan Intelligence agencies. They might have influenced and won over Zia–ul–Hasan and other Deendar Anjuman activists for indulging in sabotage and subversive activities in India where a ready made organisational network with faithful followers wedded to the concept of jehad are available.

Since 1991, the cadre of Deendar Anjuman are freely travelling to Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi — which are sensitive and strategic cities to Pakistan — without any hindrances. Imparting training with rocket launchers and using of hand grenades, firing with machine guns, utilising the services of serving and ex-army personnel as trainers, extension of visas to the trainees without any valid reason is not possible without the knowledge and permission of the Pak Army or Intelligence.

Conclusion

The Deendar Anjuman organisation gained lot of publicity through national and international media by their recent acts of violence. By doing subversive and sabotage activities in the name of jehad, the organisation will definitely gain sympathy among the major Islamic terrorist organisations in the world. Deendar Anjuman activists wrote a letter to WAMY (World Association of Muslim Youth, a pro-jehadi and pan–Islamic organisation based at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) soliciting their support and supply of literature. It is a clear–cut example of Deendar Anjuman’s efforts in forging alliance with pan-Islamic organisations of the world. With their recent sabotage and subversive activities in India, the Deendar Anjuman successfully shed out its negative image (i.e., heretic organisation) and gained legitimacy and equal standing among the Islamic Terrorist Organisations.

So far, about (71) accused were identified and (29) cases were registered in AP, Karnataka and Maharashtra on Deendar activists. Among the (71) accused, (25) members have undergone militant training in Pakistan. A number of preachers, followers and sympathisers are living in various parts of A.P, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Most of the accused are important office bearers of Deendar Anjuman organisation. Inspite of all these incidents the remaining leaders of the Deendar Anjuman organisation are denying the involvement of their organisation in the recent incidents. A close watch should be maintained on the activities of the Deendar followers, through out the state. A thorough verification should be done while issuing verification certificate and their movements to abroad, especially Pakistan. n
