‘I have benefited immensely from your magazine’

Mohammed Salim

Please accept my greetings on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of your magazine, Communalism Combat. I congratulate all of you, the board of editors, contributors and all others connected with Communalism Combat on this occasion.

Since the days when I was a member of parliament (Rajya Sabha), I have benefited immensely from your magazine. Over the last 10 years, it has already made its presence felt in the country and abroad. Its firm commitment against all sorts of communalism and fundamentalism of all varieties has given it its own characteristics. It has served me as a ready reference on communal questions.

Normally, our print media only covers events and seldom analyses issues. Communalism Combat not only analyses issues objectively, but has also continuously followed up developments with regard to communal build-ups. This is particularly true in the case of Gujarat over the past decade.

I appreciate your efforts and realise how difficult it must be to carry on your task, particularly in a communally charged atmosphere. In the case of Communalism Combat, it is not just a collection of pieces put together as articles; it is also a battle to preserve peace before it shatters into pieces.

In the present context prevalent in the subcontinent, I feel it is not enough to simply reiterate our commitment to secularism. The situation demands that we become aggressively secular in all respects. This is precisely what Communalism Combat is doing.

(Mohammed Salim is minister-in-charge, Minorities’ Development and Welfare Department, SESUU, Department of Youth Services and Technical Education Department).
