Bombay Bows to Its Fuhrer

Before and after the violence of 1992-1993, especially after the Justice BN Srikrishna Commission recorded the direct involvement and complicity of the Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray Bombay and Mumbai’s elite bowed to show their allegiance to a man who had not only spewed venom and violence against a section of our people but who had defied Indian law and passed brazen comments under the Indian judiciary.

Industrialists, cricketers, Bollywoord celebrities among others rushed to be seen with and behind the man who had made Bombay burn....

The fawning of Bombay’s elite was a precursor of what has followed.... Mumbai has since  barely recovered its robust character; worse we showed the way for what was to follow in Gujarat in 2002.
