Breaking
the Silence
(unravelling the evidence 2) sounds of silence....
Even before
the state government disbanded the Srikrishna Commission, the mainstream
media had started abandoning coverage of the Commission’s proceedings
while coverage of the trial into the serial bomb blasts (March 1993)
received front page attention. Communalism Combat, in
August-September 1994 explored this selective amnesia -- cover story
Sounds of Silence – after which some coverage of the Commission’s
proceedings resumed. This privileging of one set of human tragedies over
another has been compounded with the deliverance of discriminatory
justice. While those guilty of the gruesome blasts have been punished,
none of those guilty of the largely anti-minority pogrom of December
1992-January 1993 have been punished.
In the
twentieth year of the violence, May 2012, Meena Menon senior journalist
and author released her book, Riots and After in Mumbai that is a
detailed narrative of the survivors.
Lasting
peace and reconciliation between communities seems to evade Mumbai as we
have collectively failed to reclaim the space captured by the aggressor.
