Chiragan and recitation of Bahdur Shah zafar peotry at Khoon darwaza on the eve of death anniversary of Bahadur shah zafar

Friends,

On the occasion of 150 death anniversary of Bahadur Shah Zafar, Khudai Khidmatgar had organised “yadgar-e zafar - azadi bachao march” last year, as we consider him a significant representative of India's pluralist culture. Upon his exile from India, Bahadur Shah Zafar expressed his feelings thus:

Lagtaa nahin hai dil mera ujdey dayaar mein
Kis ki bani hai aalam-e naa-paayedaar mein

It may be recalled that Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose began his INA campaign from the grave of Bahadur Shah Zafar in Rangoon. He said, “I call this moment historic as this is the first occasion when India's new revolutionary army is paying tribute to the head of India's first revolutionary army. We have taken a pledge to take forward the task of emperor (Samrat) Bahadur Shah Zafar and free India from British bondage.”

In our society and also in general the world as a whole, the forces of reaction – i.e., groups serving the interests of few at the expense of society or people-at-large and future generations – have been in ascendance for quite some time. In order to serve the vested interests of the ruling class, and to usurp the surplus generated by the toiling people, they try every trick to keep the people divided – so that they could ‘win elections’ and ‘rule democratically’. And, it is because of the above objective and ideology, every progressive symbol, even if that be of the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, is an anathema to them.

The progressive forces need to counter the designs of reactionary forces in every sphere of life. Therefore, on the death anniversary of Bahadur Shah Zafar, in addition to the ghazal programme, we will take the pledge to preserve our independence, and reiterate our demand that without further delay, the Government of India should –

1) Name a Central University after Bahadur Shah Zafar.
2) Celebrate his birth anniversary,
3) Install a portrait of Bahadur Shah Zafar in Parliament.
