‘CC is taken seriously by others’

Vibhuti Narain Rai

It is difficult to believe that Communalism Combat has already completed 10 very eventful years in which it has made a significant contribution to the defence of secular and democratic values in our country. It is very encouraging to know that this journal is widely read and that its views are also accorded a lot of respect, even by those who may not necessarily share them.

I first came in contact with this publication almost at the time of its inception, when it carried an interview with me. In an interview with Teesta Setalvad, one of its editors, I had said in passing that the role of the administration in the prompt control of a communal riot was crucial. To my surprise, I found this comment of mine quoted in many newspapers and publications all over the country. This brought home to me the fact that Communalism Combat was taken seriously by others.

I am very happy that this journal has sustained itself and has taken an unflinching stand against all brands of fundamentalism and religious intolerance. As a result, it not only strengthens the struggle against these but also gives a lot of useful and important information about the suppression and ill-treatment of religious minorities in different parts of the world such as Pakistan, Bangladesh etc. The symbiotic relationship that exists between religious intolerance and economic exploitation has also been well illustrated by many articles carried in Communalism Combat.

I would like to end by saying that what is to be appreciated the most is the fact that Communalism Combat is not just a publication but is itself involved in activism. The recent intervention in the Best Bakery Case is an inspiring example that others should try and follow. I hope that Communalism Combat continues to set high standards of journalistic integrity and of courageous activism.
